live the life you love, love the life you live <3

A Simple Life August 8, 2011

Lately Life has been pretty hectic, and sometimes I just want to believe that life really is simpler than we make it. I have been taking the time to relax and simplify my life to help keep my focus on becoming greener. Being green means understanding the life around you and how you affect it. Once you think of being green as an act of good for all, then you got the right idea about what it means to be green.

Just a couple ideas to make your days easier

Take a trip to the library

This is good to keep your brain moving, and its free. Not many things in life are free anymore, and we should embrace that!

Use Organic cleaning products.

Products like seventh generation, and simple green work well against all messes, and is better for you and your families health, and the environment. Many companies are starting to use 100% recycled plastic bottles, which also is helping with the earth.

Need more energy??

The foods you eat every day have an affect on your energy level and mood. Eating red meats such as ground beef can leave you feeling sleepy, while fish which is rich in omega 3 fatty acids can help you feel more energized. The same goes for vegetables. Veggies that have been cooked have less nutrients, therefore leaving you feeling less energzed and full of vitamins, so always try to eat them raw or uncooked. Eating more whole grains instead of white breads will help as well. The healthier you eat the more you feel energized. Another important component of feeling more energized every day is your sleep pattern. If you are sleeping too much, or not enough, or don’t go to bed and wake up at a consistent time and schedule it can affect your daytime hours. It is important to know when to sleep and for how long. Teens tend to sleep more than adults because of their growing stages. All in all, it is imporant to feel your best, so treat your body and mind well.

All Natural Dog Treats-Blue Dog Bakery and Old Mother Hubbard May 26, 2011

Before I had done a post about Alaska Bakery Dog Treats, and recently at PetSmart I found these cute little organic dog treas, and had to buy them. The price was what got me to buy them, the big box was only $2.99 and the small bagg was $1.59. I really enjoy the thought of organic dog treats because they are so much healthier for my furry friends! The brand of the first is Blue Dog Bakery shaped like little animals, and the second is Old Mother Hubbard Baking Co.

I thought it would be funny to have my pitbull Twelve Gage show off some of his tricks while expressing his love for the new found treats. His tricks include, shake his hand, jump 180 degree turn, rollover, play dead, close the door, catch it off his nose, high five, and he wants to learn tons more. If you have any good dog tricks I can teach him, let me know! I always want to keep his brain moving!

Organic Red Velvet Cake Recipe April 4, 2011

So of all the cakes out there, I would have to say Red Velvet is one of my favorites. I figured, there has to be a way of making it without all the food coloring and non healthy ingredients. So i feel this recipe will taste good, and have you thinking healthier!

note: you don’t have to substitute the food coloring for beets, or any of the ingredients for regular baking items. You can mix and match to how you like it, it will make it more enjoyable for you!

Frosting recipe is at the bottom.

Ingredients:
6 organic beets, boiled for 40 minutes, and then cooled, peeled, and chopped coarsely
1/2 cup organic applesauce
1/2 cup organic butter, softened
1 1/2 cups organic sugar
2 eggs, preferably organic and free-range
1 tsp. organic vanilla extract
1 Tb. vinegar or lemon juice
1 cup organic plain yogurt
2 Tb. organic cocoa powder or organic raw chocolate powder
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 cups organic spelt flour or all purpose flour or cake flour, sifted
1 tsp. Himalayan or sea salt

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour two 9 inch round layer pans. Combine chopped cooked beets and applesauce in a blender and blend until smooth. It should look like this:

In a large mixing bowl in an electric mixer, cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add vanilla, and then add the beet mixture, mixing well. Add the vinegar and the yogurt and mix well again.

In a separate bowl, mix the cocoa or chocolate powder, baking soda, flour, and salt together. Add to the wet ingredients and mix until well blended.

Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for approximately 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans on a wire rack for 5 minutes before removing from pans and allowing to cool completely. When the cakes are cool, you may frost them.

Red Velvet Cake Frosting (not a traditional cream cheese but a healthier organic cream one)

Ingredients:
6 Tb. organic spelt flour or all-purpose flour
1 cup water or organic milk
1 cup organic butter
1 cup organic sugar
1 tsp. organic vanilla extract

Directions:
Bring flour and water to a boil, reduce heat, and stir constantly until thick and slightly clear. Cool in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight. Cream together butter, sugar, and vanilla. Add the flour mixture and continue to beat until fluffy. Keep the frosting refrigerated before use.

I really enjoyed this cake. I hope you do too. Any other recipes you love that are healthier, let me know, Id love to post them!

Earth Hour 2011 March 26, 2011

So today, at 8:30 Central Time Earth is celebrating Earth Hour. Which means for one hour, it is every individual persons duty to participate. Earth gives us life and food and shelter, we need to give our grattitude and thanks. It can be something simple like, getting cans ready to recycle tomorrow, (if you never do), making an organic dinner, cleaning the trash on your neighborhood. Something that you would never do any other day!! For me I am going to take a walk to the hills nearby my house, and clean up some trash and plant some little plants. It won’t cost me that much, and I will feel like I helped the Earth in some great way! Its a simple hour of your time. The benefits of doing something good always overweigh every other feeling in life. There are so many things you could do, that are small, but could help our earth so much. Donating to Japans natural disaster, I would say is just as great! Whatever you choose, just do it sometime today, It doesn’t HAVE to be in that hour, but as long as its today, your helping out!
