Coconut Oil – A conditioner alternative June 9, 2014

images

Coconut Oil has many benefits for your health, skin, and hair, and is becoming more widespread for its use and more acknoledged as a must have in homes everywhere. I bought my first tub of organic coconut oil mostly for the hair benefits, to be used as a conditioner, but since I have boughten it, I have used it for many uses, including cooking.

I have red hair naturally, and while my hair is thick, I have a thin type of hair, I just have alot of it. My hair responds well to leave in conditioners, and anything that doesn’t weigh it down and lets it flow.  My first try with coconut oil I must say was very frustrating. I put too much in the top (and I still only used a couple drops), And it held down my hair like a grease monkey. The water does not really wash it out where you put it, so I had to wait a day or so for it to work its way out. All hair types are different, which makes looking for organic shampoo and conditioner that much harder, but i decided not to give up on coconut oil. After all, it did leave my hair with a really nice shine afterwards.

So the next time I tried it, things went much better. I poured only a drop in my hand and started at the tips, and worked my way into my hair with never really touching the top of my head at all, to only have the bottom taken care of. It worked very well, my hair was left with a wonderful shine and was not a grease ball, instead my hair had the same bounce but with the added shine and luster of coconut oil.

Now this was with me still using my regular Herbal Essences Shampoo and Conditioner, I have not switched over to organic as of yet, as I need to find a way to make my own that works everytime.

So I consider me using the coconut oil only as a last leave in conditioner treatment, but I will still wash it out a bit to ensure my hair doesn’t absorb too much of it.

I do not use this treatment everyday, as my hair is fine and will not take too much to hold it down. All hair types vary, and if you have thicker, drier hair this might work very well for you.

My experience with the coconut oil is one I wanted to share so all will know that it is such a healthy oil that we need to use more often. I have used it in replace of cooking oil, have used it to make scars less visable, including strech marks, used it as tanning oil before going into the sun, etc. Everytime I find a new use for it I am excited to try it and use the organic ways of life. One more transition on my way to living an organic life.

A Simple Life August 8, 2011

Lately Life has been pretty hectic, and sometimes I just want to believe that life really is simpler than we make it. I have been taking the time to relax and simplify my life to help keep my focus on becoming greener. Being green means understanding the life around you and how you affect it. Once you think of being green as an act of good for all, then you got the right idea about what it means to be green.

Just a couple ideas to make your days easier

Take a trip to the library

This is good to keep your brain moving, and its free. Not many things in life are free anymore, and we should embrace that!

Use Organic cleaning products.

Products like seventh generation, and simple green work well against all messes, and is better for you and your families health, and the environment. Many companies are starting to use 100% recycled plastic bottles, which also is helping with the earth.

Need more energy??

The foods you eat every day have an affect on your energy level and mood. Eating red meats such as ground beef can leave you feeling sleepy, while fish which is rich in omega 3 fatty acids can help you feel more energized. The same goes for vegetables. Veggies that have been cooked have less nutrients, therefore leaving you feeling less energzed and full of vitamins, so always try to eat them raw or uncooked. Eating more whole grains instead of white breads will help as well. The healthier you eat the more you feel energized. Another important component of feeling more energized every day is your sleep pattern. If you are sleeping too much, or not enough, or don’t go to bed and wake up at a consistent time and schedule it can affect your daytime hours. It is important to know when to sleep and for how long. Teens tend to sleep more than adults because of their growing stages. All in all, it is imporant to feel your best, so treat your body and mind well.

Organic Cheese Cake Recipe June 13, 2011

So my love for Organic cake recipes does not stop at Red Velvet Cake. I enjoy Cheese Cake, perhaps more than Red Velvet. The mixture of cheese and cream adds so much delight to a dessert. I love it so much, I went off finding a recipe that is organic, and still delicious. At leasts its healthier, right?

REMEMBER:: You can substitute all ingredients for organic ingredients, or you can only substitute a few. It is completly up to you and your budget. The creativity makes it your own personal recipe. Plus some ingredients are difficult to find as organic.

So to start with you need::

Ingredients:
For the Crust
1 1/2 cups fine graham cracker crumbs
5 tablespoons unsalted organic butter, melted

For the Filling
1 pound cream cheese organic softened to room temperature

1 cup organic sugar

6 large organic egg yolks3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

1 1/2 teaspoons organic vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 cups organic sour cream

Directions::

1.)  Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease the bottom and sides of an 8 x 2 1/2-inch pan or a circular pan, whichever you prefer.

2.)  In a mixing bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs with the melted butter. Press this mixture into the base of the prepared pan and partway up the sides, using your fingers or the back of a spoon. Use a flat-bottomed glass to press the crumbs smoothly and firmly into place. Wrap the outside of the pan in a double layer of heavy aluminum foil to prevent leaking.

3.)  Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and sugar in a large bowl until very smooth, about 3 minutes, scraping the bowl and beaters as needed. Beat in the egg yolks, beating until the batter is smooth and scraping down the sides as necessary. Add the lemon juice, vanilla, and salt and beat until mixed well. Beat in the sour cream just until blended.

4.)  Pour the batter into the prepare pan. Set the pan inside a larger pan (a 12- x 12-inch cake pan, for example) and surround it with 1 inch of very hot water. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes.

5.)  Turn off the oven without opening the door and let the cake cool for 1 hour inside. Transfer the cheesecake to a rack (the center will still be jiggly) and cool to room temperature, about 1 hour. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least six hours or overnight.

6.) After you set it out on a platter, you can use organic strawberries, blueberries, zest of lemon, or drizzles of chocolate to make your cheesecake have even more flavor and to ehance to the looks of your cheescake. Your guests will be in awe of your baking skills, and it makes it so much more unique, than plain cheesecake. Remember this is your recipe, and whatever you like on top of cheesecake, follow your heart and do it!

Serves 12.

All Natural Dog Treats-Blue Dog Bakery and Old Mother Hubbard May 26, 2011

Before I had done a post about Alaska Bakery Dog Treats, and recently at PetSmart I found these cute little organic dog treas, and had to buy them. The price was what got me to buy them, the big box was only $2.99 and the small bagg was $1.59. I really enjoy the thought of organic dog treats because they are so much healthier for my furry friends! The brand of the first is Blue Dog Bakery shaped like little animals, and the second is Old Mother Hubbard Baking Co.

I thought it would be funny to have my pitbull Twelve Gage show off some of his tricks while expressing his love for the new found treats. His tricks include, shake his hand, jump 180 degree turn, rollover, play dead, close the door, catch it off his nose, high five, and he wants to learn tons more. If you have any good dog tricks I can teach him, let me know! I always want to keep his brain moving!

Growing your own garden. May 5, 2011

So it’s that time of year. Where people start seeds from start or they buy small plants from stores. I personally have a mix of both. I have always grown a garden this time of year for about 5 years now. Some have been extravagant, and some small. This year I would say is relatively smaller than normal. I originally got the inspiration from my grandmother.  She loves to grow tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, squash, and strawberries. She also has herbs like rosemary and thyme.  I look up to her love for the earth so much, as I believe sometimes life revolved around technology can easily make us forget the importance of life and earth. She is everything you think of a grandmother I call her Oma.

This is her garden this year.

She has a very cute little garden.

My garden is much smaller, and I post pictures of them tomorrow. Just thought I’d share how beautiful my gma’s work is.
